How to replace a toilet wax ring

Replacing a toilet wax ring is necessary if the toilet leaks from the base or you detect odors. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Gather Tools and Materials

  • Replacement wax ring (or wax-free gasket if preferred)

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Screwdriver

  • Putty knife or scraper

  • Sponge or wet/dry vacuum

  • Rags and towels

  • Gloves

  • Bucket (optional)

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

  1. Locate the shut-off valve behind or near the toilet and turn it clockwise to close.

  2. Flush the toilet to drain as much water as possible from the tank and bowl.

  3. Use a sponge or wet/dry vacuum to remove remaining water from the tank and bowl.

3. Disconnect and Remove the Toilet

  1. Disconnect the water supply line:

    • Unscrew the supply line from the tank using an adjustable wrench. Have a bucket or towel ready to catch any residual water.

  2. Remove the toilet bolts:

    • Pry off the bolt caps at the base of the toilet. Unscrew the nuts holding the toilet in place with a wrench.

  3. Lift and remove the toilet:

    • Gently rock the toilet to break the wax seal. Lift it straight up and place it on a towel or cardboard to prevent damage or mess.

4. Remove the Old Wax Ring

  1. Scrape off the old wax ring from the toilet flange and the bottom of the toilet bowl using a putty knife.

  2. Inspect the flange for damage. If it's cracked or corroded, it may need repair or replacement.

5. Install the New Wax Ring

  1. Position the wax ring:

    • Place the new wax ring on the flange or the bottom of the toilet bowl. Ensure it’s centered.

    • If using a wax-free gasket, follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.

  2. Check the flange bolts:

    • Insert or adjust the closet bolts into the slots on the flange so they are upright and evenly spaced.

6. Reinstall the Toilet

  1. Lower the toilet:

    • Carefully lift the toilet and align the bolt holes in the base with the bolts on the flange.

    • Lower the toilet straight down, pressing firmly to compress the wax ring and create a seal.

  2. Secure the toilet:

    • Tighten the nuts on the bolts evenly, alternating sides to prevent cracking the porcelain. Do not overtighten.

    • Replace the bolt caps.

7. Reconnect the Water Supply

  1. Attach the water supply line to the tank and tighten with a wrench.

  2. Turn on the shut-off valve and allow the tank to fill.

8. Test the Installation

  1. Flush the toilet several times to ensure there are no leaks at the base.

  2. Check for water seeping from the base or the supply line connection.

9. Optional: Seal the Base

  • Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the base of the toilet for a finished look and added stability.

Tips

  • Use gloves: Wax can be sticky and messy to handle.

  • Inspect the floor: If the floor or subfloor is damaged, repair it before reinstalling the toilet.

  • Choose the right wax ring: Taller wax rings or rings with a flange are better for toilets with uneven floors or deeper flanges.

  • Work with a helper: Toilets can be heavy and awkward to handle alone.
